Getting recommended by an AI engine can feel like a black box. It isn't. Behind the magic is a set of signals you can deliberately strengthen. Here's the eight-step playbook we use to turn our clients into the sources the models quote.

If our last piece made the case for why Generative Engine Optimization matters, this one is the how. None of these steps require gaming anything. They're about making your expertise unmistakably clear — to humans and to machines.

The eight moves, at a glance

1. Answer the question first

AI engines extract direct answers. Lead each section with a clear, complete, one-or-two-sentence answer to the question it addresses — then add nuance below. Burying the answer under three paragraphs of preamble makes it un-liftable. The inverted pyramid that journalists use is exactly the structure models reward.

2. Write in extractable passages

Models pull passages, not whole pages. Each section should make sense on its own, without requiring the reader to have read the section before it. Define terms in place. Avoid "as we discussed above." Think of every paragraph as a potential standalone quote — because that's exactly how it may be used.

"Write every paragraph as if it might be quoted alone — because in an AI answer, it will be."

3. Build real topical authority

One brilliant page rarely earns citations. Comprehensive, interlinked coverage of a subject does. When your site demonstrably covers a topic from every relevant angle — the core concept, the edge cases, the comparisons, the how-tos — engines learn to treat you as an authority on it. Build topic clusters, not orphan posts.

4. Mark it up with structured data

Schema markup is how you hand machines a clean, unambiguous version of your content. Use it generously: Article, FAQPage, HowTo, Organization, Product, and BreadcrumbList where relevant. Structured data won't fabricate authority you don't have, but it removes friction for engines trying to understand and trust what you've published.

5. Earn third-party corroboration

Engines weigh whether other trusted sources agree with you and reference you. Digital PR, expert citations, mentions in respected industry publications, and being referenced across the web all reinforce that your brand is a credible entity. This is classic authority-building — and it pays double in the GEO era.

6. Keep your facts fresh

AI answers favor current information, especially for anything time-sensitive. Date your content, update it when reality changes, and remove stale claims. A page that's visibly maintained signals reliability; one frozen in 2022 signals risk the engine would rather not cite.

7. Strengthen your entity

"Entity" is just the engine's model of who you are as a known thing in the world. Make that model strong and consistent: a clear Organization schema, a coherent About page, matching details (name, location, contact) everywhere you appear, and a presence on the platforms that define your category. When the engine is confident about who you are, it's far more comfortable putting your name in an answer.

8. Measure what AI says about you

You can't improve what you don't watch. Regularly ask the major engines the questions your customers ask, and note whether — and how — you appear. Track your citation share over time the way you'd track rankings. This is the feedback loop that tells you which of the previous seven steps is working.

Putting it together

Notice that none of these are tricks. They're the natural result of being genuinely expert, genuinely clear, and genuinely well-organized — and then making all of that legible to machines. That overlap is why GEO and great SEO reinforce each other instead of competing.

It's also a lot of disciplined work to do well and to keep doing. That's where we come in: auditing how the engines see you today, finding the gaps, and executing the playbook week after week until your brand is the answer.
